Hashimoto's is the diagnosis most people have never heard of until it is theirs. It is the most common cause of an underactive thyroid, it is an autoimmune disease, and the standard advice usually amounts to a daily hormone tablet and an annual blood test. So it is worth knowing that curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, has now been tested in people with Hashimoto's in two randomised controlled trials. Small trials, recent trials, but real ones, in people rather than mice. Neither is a reason to change your medication. Both are worth understanding.

What Hashimoto's thyroiditis is
In Hashimoto's, the immune system attacks the thyroid, the small gland in the neck that sets the body's pace. The attack is slow. Over years, the gland struggles to make enough hormone, and the familiar symptoms arrive: tiredness, feeling cold, weight creeping up, low mood, brain fog. Doctors track it with two main blood tests: thyroid antibodies (usually anti-TPO, a measure of how hard the immune system is attacking) and TSH, the signal the brain sends to push the thyroid. When the thyroid struggles, TSH rises.
Like other autoimmune diseases, Hashimoto's runs on three things: inflammation, oxidative stress and a misfiring immune system. Nutrition can influence all three, which is why researchers keep testing food-derived compounds in it, and why curcumin, the best-studied anti-inflammatory compound in the plant world, was an obvious candidate.
What the human trials found
There are exactly two randomised controlled trials of curcumin supplementation in people with Hashimoto's. Not two dozen. Two. Here is what they showed.
The diet-plus-curcumin trial
Fifty-seven people with Hashimoto's followed an anti-inflammatory diet; some were also given curcumin [1]. The people who took the curcumin had:
- a decrease in anti-TPO antibodies, meaning less autoimmune attack on the thyroid
- a decrease in TSH, meaning the thyroid needed less stimulation because it was producing more hormone itself
- a slight rise in HDL, the "good" cholesterol
The researchers wrote: "Curcumin may have possible benefits for thyroid autoimmunity."
The inflammation trial
The second trial measured inflammation directly [2]. People taking curcumin alongside the anti-inflammatory diet had decreases in IL-6 and hs-CRP, two inflammatory molecules your GP can measure in blood, and in NF-κB, the master switch inside cells that turns inflammation on. The striking part is the comparison group: people who followed the healthy diet but did not take curcumin saw their hs-CRP and NF-κB rise over the same period.
The researchers wrote: "Curcumin, by reducing inflammation, can be effective as an adjunctive treatment alongside an anti-inflammatory diet in individuals with Hashimoto's thyroiditis."

Two trials, both short, both recent. Promising, not proven. That is the honest summary, and it is also more human evidence than most supplements aimed at thyroid health can show.
Why the form of curcumin matters
Very little of plain curcumin survives the journey through your gut into your bloodstream. Most of a dose passes straight through, which is why laboratory results for curcumin have often looked far better than the results in people. Nanocurcumin shrinks the particles so that far more is absorbed, and it is the reason researchers now reach for nano forms when they want blood levels high enough to matter. Is it safe alongside thyroid medication?
In the trials above, curcumin was added to a diet, and participants stayed on their usual care. Nothing in this research supports changing or stopping levothyroxine or any other prescribed treatment. Curcumin can interact with blood thinners and some other medicines, so if you take regular medication, mention curcumin to your GP or pharmacist before starting. And keep any supplement well away from the time you take your thyroid tablet, which is best taken on its own.
Frequently asked questions
Can curcumin cure Hashimoto's?
No. Nothing cures Hashimoto's yet. The trials show curcumin may reduce the autoimmune attack and the inflammation around it, alongside diet and standard care.
Will it replace my thyroid tablet?
No. If your thyroid is underactive, hormone replacement is the treatment. Curcumin was tested as an addition, never as a substitute.
What changed in the people who took it?
Fewer thyroid antibodies, a lower TSH, slightly better cholesterol in one trial; lower inflammation on blood tests in the other.
Is turmeric in food enough?
No trial used culinary turmeric. A teaspoon holds under 100 mg of poorly absorbed curcumin.
How strong is this evidence?
Two small randomised trials, both pointing the same way. Enough to take seriously, not enough to settle anything. Larger trials are needed and we will update this page as they arrive.
